III. Manipulate the controls to redesign the zoning envelope.

A house with data as value

The house collects data, stored them for it's own use, and share them on the network.

The older the house gets and the more people living in the house, the value gets higher.

To collect the data, the framework was set as criteria to extract data in terms of 'quality' out of the house.

This "OR" campaign for architecture is meant to stimulate the imagination of non architects into rethinking the possibilities of experiencing the world. By juxtaposing normative buildings and architecture one is left to make a choice - What would you rather?

These ads deal with the informational divide between architects and the public. By questioning the public about their knowledge of architects, we can discover aspects both positive and negative about the profession.

Architect: The architect is multi-disciplinary. All fields of work and study are considered appropriate knowledge for architectural thoughts. However, many collaborators are needed in order to create built works. The architect is an intellectual problem solver. However, pay is often low and hours long. Above all the architect is the coordinator of many discipline’s work.

Building: The collaboration needed to create a building as well as its economical driving force are highly underestimated. A very small portion of the construction in the United States is designed by architects. Why are most architect designed buildings not considered “architecture”? And what is the benefit of that which is considered “architecture”? Is the analysis of life safety and building codes all that defines “architecture”?

Concept: When architects create theoretical works they intend them to be many things other than just architecture: art and engineering, concept and dogma. Most intend all to follow the rules outlined in them in order to solve larger problems.

13 weeks/ challenges/ critiques = 13 ways to probe and produce architecture.
Each week a design challenge will be reviewed and a new challenge will be issued. Therefore, each challenge requires that students generate and commit to an architectural response in a limited time frame. Each challenge will be client or context driven. Projects scale will vary (from body to building to city). Project contexts will vary (animal, vegetable, mineral…virtual). At each review three projects will be given merit and one will be exhibited. Although there will be winners, there will be no losers. Each student will produce up to 13 projects and a final studio catalogue.
